How to trade NFP

NFP is the US non-farm payrolls release: jobs added outside agriculture, usually on the first Friday of the month at 8:30 New York time. It moves forex and gold because it changes what traders expect the Fed to do next. Trading it means writing down the forecast before the print, then judging the surprise against that forecast, wages and the revision of the prior month included, rather than the payroll headline alone.

What NFP is in trading

The figure comes from the monthly Employment Situation of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The headline everyone quotes is the change in non-farm payrolls from the establishment survey: how many jobs firms added or cut, outside farming. The same release carries average hourly earnings, the workweek, and, from the household survey, the unemployment rate and labor-force participation. “NFP” in a headline often means only the payrolls number. The release is four numbers that can disagree.

The forecast you write down is the consensus of economists for this month, not last month’s print. The surprise is actual minus forecast. A print of 180,000 is not “strong” because 180,000 is a large number. It is strong if the consensus was 100,000, and it is a miss if the consensus was 250,000. The previous month is revised in the same release. A revision of tens of thousands of jobs is ordinary. Adding this month’s surprise to that revision is the jobs news. The headline without the revision is half a sentence.

What time NFP comes out

The usual slot is the first Friday of the month at 8:30 New York time. London is often 13:30 and Paris 14:30, but the US and Europe do not change their clocks on the same dates. For a few weeks each year the release is one hour earlier in London and Paris. Do not memorize a local hour, for Tokyo or for anywhere else. Read the time on the economic calendar for that Friday. If the Friday is a US holiday the release moves, sometimes to the Thursday before. That calendar row carries the date, the time in your zone, the forecast, the previous print, and, once it exists, the actual. “NFP day” without that row is a guess.

Liquidity thins in the minute before 8:30. Spreads on EUR/USD, USD/JPY, and gold widen, and the first prints on a chart are often bad fills, not a direction. The number is public at the same second for everyone. There is no edge in being the first click. There is an edge in having the forecast, the previous print, and your definition of a real surprise written down before the spreads blow out.

Why forex and gold move

The Fed watches jobs and wages when it decides whether the next move is a cut, a hold, or, more rarely these days, a hike. A labor market that is clearly stronger than economists expected, with wages firm, usually leads traders to price fewer cuts. The dollar’s expected yield rises. USD/JPY and the dollar against the euro often rise with it in the first minutes. Gold is priced in dollars and pays no yield, so a stronger dollar and a higher expected rate path usually weigh on it. A clear miss, with soft wages, usually does the opposite: more cuts priced, a softer dollar, gold higher.

That is the usual map, not a rule. If the market had already bought the dollar into the number, a small beat can sell off. If the three details disagree, the first minute is a whip. Payrolls above forecast, the prior month revised down, and wages hot: the headline says “strong”, the history says “less strong”, the wage line says “the Fed still sees pressure”. Gold can drop on the wage print while EUR/USD is still deciding which of the three numbers it believes. You wait until the rates market, not the first tick, has picked a side.

NFP and CPI are the same kind of trade

CPI is the inflation print. NFP is the labor print. The Fed uses both, and they do not come out on the same morning. A hot CPI the week after a weak NFP can give back the dollar selloff, because the path of rates just got a second input. Trading “NFP and CPI” is not a different method. For each release you write the consensus, you define a surprise before the clock, you read the line that the Fed actually weights (core CPI, or wages and the revision, not only the headline), and you let the first violent seconds pass. The forex calendar is where those two rows sit next to the other high-impact names: retail sales, GDP, and the Fed meeting itself.

Steps for the release

The work is mostly done before 8:30. After the number, the job is to read three lines and to stay out of the worst second.

  1. The day before, open the calendar and find the Employment Situation. Write the time in your zone, the payrolls forecast, the previous print, and the wage forecast.
  2. Pick the markets you will watch and no others. A common set is EUR/USD, USD/JPY, and gold. Write them down so you are not shopping for a chart after the number.
  3. Decide what a real surprise is, in advance. One usable bar is a payrolls miss or beat of more than about 50,000 versus the forecast, or a wage print that disagrees with the payrolls.
  4. At the print, read payrolls versus forecast, the revision of the prior month, and average hourly earnings, in that order. Ignore the adjective in the headline until those three are known.
  5. Let the first seconds pass. Spreads are wide, and the first tick often reverses when the revision and the wages land a moment later.
  6. If the three numbers agree, the dollar move has a reason to hold, and gold usually goes the other way. If they disagree, do nothing until the whip is over.
  7. Fifteen to thirty minutes later, check whether the move is still there. The direction that survived is the one the rate expectations agreed with. The direction that vanished was the headline.

Example: a miss that is not only the headline

Illustration, not a past release to memorize. The forecast is 180,000. The previous print is 150,000. The actual comes in at 90,000, and the prior month is revised down by 40,000. Average hourly earnings print at 0.2 percent against a 0.3 percent forecast. All three are soft: a miss on jobs, a weaker history, and no wage pressure. Traders mark more room for Fed cuts. The dollar often drops, so EUR/USD often rises and USD/JPY often falls. Gold, priced in that softer dollar, often jumps. You did not need to guess 90,000. You needed 180,000 written down so that 90,000 was obviously a miss, and you needed to see the revision and the wage before calling it clean.

Example: a beat that gold does not believe

Same forecast of 180,000. Payrolls come in at 250,000, which looks like a clear beat. The prior month is revised down by 60,000, so the net news on jobs is much smaller than the headline. Average hourly earnings come in at 0.5 percent against 0.3 percent. The first seconds can whip: dollar up on the headline, dollar down as the revision is spotted, dollar up again as wages land. Gold often falls on the wage beat even if the payrolls headline later gets faded, because the rate path cares about pay pressure. This is the week you do not “trade NFP” off one number. The clean gold rally is the jobs miss with soft wages. A jobs miss with hot wages is not that rally. A jobs beat with a large downward revision is not a clean dollar buy either.

Where the number sits on Novex

The economic calendar puts the time, the forecast, the previous print, and the actual on one row, with the currency and the impact, so NFP is not a rumor about “Friday”. Market Live carries the headline as it hits, which is where the wage line and the revision show up when the payrolls number is the only thing the banner said. Read the row before the print. Read the headline feed for the two details the banner skips. Then use the steps above. The calendar will not take the trade for you. It stops you walking into 8:30 without the forecast.

Common questions

What is NFP in trading?

NFP is the monthly change in US jobs outside agriculture. Traders care because it shifts expectations for the Fed, and through that the dollar and gold. The tradable release also includes the revision and average hourly earnings.

How do you trade NFP in forex?

Write the forecast before 8:30 New York time, define a surprise in advance, then judge payrolls, the revision, and wages together. Let the first seconds pass. Trade the direction that still agrees with the rate path, or stand aside when the three numbers disagree.

What time is the NFP release?

Usually the first Friday of the month at 8:30 New York time. London is often 13:30 and Paris 14:30, but for a few weeks each year, when the US and Europe are not on the same side of the clock change, it is one hour earlier. Holidays can move the day. The calendar row for that month is the time that counts.

How do you trade NFP news on gold?

Gold usually moves opposite the dollar in the first minutes, because it is priced in dollars and pays no yield. A jobs miss with soft wages is the clean rally. Hot wages can knock gold down even when the payrolls headline is mixed. Wait for wages before you call the move.

How do NFP and CPI fit in a forex calendar?

Both are high-impact US releases, on different days. NFP is labor and wages. CPI is inflation. Each one can reprice the Fed path, and the later one can undo the earlier move. Give each its own forecast, its own surprise, and its own row on the calendar.
